Previous 31 days of Halloween movies: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
Welcome to my personal selection of horror movies to watch in this spooky month. This instalment features paranoia of the highest extremes. Stare into the abyss long enough and the abyss will stare back.
Paranoia
Day 18
Event Horizon (1997)
One of my first forays into sci-fi horror. I watched this as a young kid, and it scared me so much that I ended up crying. But I have always come back for more of this. Plus Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne – sign me up!
Event Horizon follows the crew of a ship, who have been sent to investigate the reappearance of a ship that was missing seven years ago. The distress signal is disturbing containing screams and a latin phrase. They end up boarding the ship and find evidence of a massacre, as they search for survivors – things take a sinister turn.
Day 19
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
10 Cloverfield Lane is the second instalment in the Cloverfield franchise (featuring John Goodman), but takes a dramatic departure from its predecessor in style and story.
It follows Michelle who leaves her apartment after a blow out with her fiance, hearing of blackouts over the radio. Soon after her car is knocked off the road, and she wakes up in a bunker with an injured leg. Her captor claims that the outside air is poisoned and he took her to his bunker to keep her safe.
10 Cloverfield Lane plays with your head, as you have no idea if her captor is insane or telling the truth.
Day 20
Get Out (2017)
If you haven’t seen Get Out by Jordan Peele, you must have been living under a rock. But even if you have watched Get Out, it is still a worthwhile watch – even knowing the end.
Get Out as a horror is so effective because its social commentary and is decidedly an uncomfortable watch.
Get Out follows a couple, Chris and Rose. Chris travels to upstate New York to meet his girlfriend’s family for the first time. But as he spends more time with the family, something just does not seem right. Chris starts to notice that people are acting very strangely.
Day 21
Alone (2020)
Alone is a psychological thriller, however I would probably say for women across the world – this is definitely more of a horror in my opinion.
Alone follows a recently widowed woman named Jessica, who is travelling to relocate. But she comes across an angry driver that tailgates her. Putting it out of her mind as she arrives at the motel to stay the night, she finds she cannot shake this dangerous man. What follows is a cat and mouse game, where Jessica must battle the elements and evade her pursuer.
Watch this space for more Halloween horror recommendations later in the month.
