Previous 31 days of Halloween movies: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
Welcome to my personal selection of horror movies to watch in this spooky month. This instalment features evil beings of the supernatural type and of course the classic zombies.
Zombies, Evil Entities, Ghosts
Day 14
Wishmaster
There aren’t many films featuring a Djinn, which is a real shame and this film takes “be careful what you wish for”, to delightfully horrific results.
The djinn are in another realm, held back from entering Earth by the wishes, and it is only when the third wish is granted, that the rest of the evil djinn can walk the earth. A sorcerer traps the djinn in a fire opal to prevent this, however many moons later, this gem is discovered and an appraiser becomes linked and tortured by the djinn and visions of his deadly granted wishes.
Day 15
Evil Dead (2013)
The evil dead series are undoubtedly horror classics, however I don’t believe the most recent reimagining of the evil dead franchise gets enough love. This rendition of evil dead is a lot more deadly and bloody than its previous incarnations.
Evil Dead pretty much follows much of the plot of the 1981 movie, however there are a few changes. But the tone of the 2013 film is a lot bleaker than the comedy of its predecessor.
Evil Dead follows five friends, one of which is addicted to heroin. In an attempt to get their friend clean, they stay in a cabin to look after her as she withdraws. However things get a lot darker than expected, when they stumble upon a book called Naturom Demonto.
Day 16
Last Shift
Last Shift absolutely terrified me when I first watched it. I was not expecting much out of this low budget horror, but it absolutely delivered in spades.
Last Shift follows Jessica, a rookie police officer on her first assignment. Jessica has been tasked with manning the last shift at a police station before it is permanently closed. After getting a brief tour and instruction by her commanding officer, she is left alone in the vacant police station. However, things soon start to happen that don’t make sense that only a paranormal presence can explain.
Day 17
Candyman
Candyman was one of my first loves of horror. The premise of urban legends have always intrigued me and where a lot of horror originated so this film has a special place in my heart.
Candyman is based on the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker. It follows a graduate student, Rose, who is doing a thesis on urban folklore, where she comes across the legend of Candyman. The spirit of Candyman kills anyone who summons him by speaking his name five times in front of a mirror. And in true horror fashion, Rose tests this theory leading to bloody and gruesome consequences.
Day 18
Anything for Jackson
Anything for Jackson is a supernatural horror, though I would also say it’s a dark comedy as well.
It follows Audrey and Henry who at first glance appear to be a sweet old couple. But they are also satanists, and following the death of their son, Jackson, they are overcome with grief. Unwilling to let him go, they uncover an ancient spell that promises to return Jackson to them. Unfortunately that involves kidnapping a pregnant woman, but they ends up being the least of their worries, as they summoned more than they bargained for.
